I ‘traveled while trans’ for the first time last year. I was fortunate to be traveling between two very LGBTQIA-friendly places, but let’s be real…. They don’t hire TSA agents from the local gay bar! I hadn’t started hormones yet, and was wearing silicone falsies. I spent weeks before that trip agonizing about how to manage the security checkpoint (especially the back-scatter machine!). I have no illusions that I pass, even under the best of circumstances (and, it’s not really a goal for me), but I knew there would be ‘anomalies’ no matter which button they chose. In that case, I was fortunate insofar as the agent seemed to understand what/who they were looking at and why the machine flagged me, so it was a non-incident. They did want to pat me down on the way back, but they chose a female agent to do it, and she didn’t ask about my breasts. I feel fortunate to live on, and spend all my time on, the West coast. I have no illusions about this being a lot more fraught in other parts of the country, and as things stand right now, I’m not sure I could handle the stress and uncertainty of international travel. Kudos to you for having the courage to take that on as part of your career!
